This portrait was taken in Chicago by Bang in the early 1990s, when she was actively building a photography portfolio. She met Bergquist, who was working as a barista at a local coffee shop, and photographed her wearing the same red satin pillbox hat used in other portrait photographs, creating both repetition and a break in repetition across the images, as she also does with images in poetics.
