- Description
- Founded in 1867, the Sanborn Company created maps for American cities, primarily for the purposes of fire insurance. The shading of these maps depicted the materials and construction of each building. In the act of creating and publishing these maps of large cities like St. Louis, Sanborn broke the city down into different blocks. Each volume of maps is devoted to a specific block. When reading these maps as a whole today, it is up to the reader to piece these different blocks together, like sewing patches of fabric on a quilt, or putting together pieces of a puzzle
